The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has not produced the new look smart driving license since April this year.

This follows breakdown of the agency’s machine, which is yet to be repaired or replacedThousands of applicants for the cards have been waiting in vain.

The applicants said they have been visiting the authority offices where their images were taken but the waiting is taking too long.

The card costs Sh3,000 and is valid for three years. It has an electronic chip with details of the driver’s name, blood group and other biometric information.

The broken machine was commissioned last year in March.Director General Francis Meja confirmed the machine had broken down but they are commissioning a much bigger one soon with a capacity of printing 300 cards an hour.

“The backlog will be cleared within a week,” he said.
